Better testing needed for police

| May 21, 2015 9:01 PM

Parts of this country seem to be trying to descend into anarchy. I hate looting, but I can understand anger and frustration. As a civilized society, we cannot condone lawlessness and expect to survive.

But, part of the problem is how some police deal with crime. Some police pick and choose which laws they will enforce. Many times, police ignore certain crimes, Sometimes the local newspaper’s police blotter says, “They were counseled.” If the criminal is breaking the law, why are the police counseling them? DUI cases here are a glaring example of this attitude by the police. It reflects inconsistent and sloppy police work.

Then, there is the other extreme where police choke you to death, or shoot you in the back five times, or sever your spine, rather than have to deal with your insolence. These types of police are the judge, the jury, and the executioner. Some police, from having to deal with the dregs of society every day, become sadistic sociopaths.

My father was chief of detectives in a major city for years. Both of my brothers were cops and one still is. I grew up in a police environment and have learned that some cops also become terrible liars. Why isn’t there more frequent and better psychological testing to locate and remove bad cops? I strongly believe that cops should be required to take a psychological test at least once a year. —Sinowa Cruz, Kalispell
