The Kalispell Fire Department is launching a new free program aimed at helping residents identify potential hazards in their homes.

The Home Fire Safety Program will allow people to request the fire department to inspect their homes and give advice on fire safety measures.

The service is free, according to the city, and no fines would be assessed for hazardous findings. The program is available through assistance by the National Fire Protection Agency.

Area residents have been victims of a string of human-caused fires this spring. Incidents include house fires started by cigarettes or unattended fires, as well as controlled grass fires that grew out of control.

Appointments can be made by calling 758-7760. The department requests that residents be home at the time of inspection.
