Lake party turns into rescue

On Sunday the Hungry Horse Fire Department was called out to Lion Lake, where two men had reportedly fallen through the ice about 50 feet from shore. A crowd of about 20 adults had gathered on the frozen lake for a party around noon. Others attending the party were able to rescue the two men from the frigid water before the Hungry Horse Fire Department, Three Rivers EMS and three Flathead County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene. Emergency services transported the men to North Valley Hospital and the party dispersed.


After a man allegedly went to a Baker Avenue residence and held up a gun during a conversation, another person living at the house went to Whitefish Police Department to ask how to handle the man if he came back.

Someone asked Whitefish police to check in on an injured deer walking near Karrow Avenue. Police found the deer was capable of walking just fine on three legs.

A woman called police after her boyfriend reportedly punched her in the face and threatened to shoot her with his gun.

An employee at a U.S. 93 business called Whitefish police believing someone had paid for an item with a counterfeit $50.


A 10th Street West resident called Columbia Falls Police Department when they heard five shots coming from their city block. The caller believed them to be shots from a handgun, but police were unable to find the source of the noise.

Someone found a set of keys on Nucleus Avenue and turned them into police.


Someone called Kalispell Police Department about a van in a church parking lot, running a generator with the extension cord running into the van. Police found the van’s owner had been given permission to stay in the lot.

Kalispell incurred a string of thefts on Sunday, when a Fifth Avenue West resident called police to report someone had stolen his bike off his porch, another man reported his watch being stolen from an Appleway Drive residence and someone was caught on camera stealing a phone from a person on South Main Street.

A 10-person verbal brawl took place on Eighth Avenue East North, prompting a call from a nearby resident. While the caller was on the phone with Kalispell dispatch, a white pickup truck allegedly tried to run over one of the women involved in the altercation. The pickup had disappeared by the time law enforcement arrived to break up the fight.

An employee at a U.S. 93 hotel called police after finding a non-guest sleeping in the laundry room.

A manager at a West Idaho Street store called to report a woman who was suspected of shoplifting. The woman had been caught shoplifting before, but the manager had also found a pistol in her purse, so she asked for police assistance this time.

Someone saw what looked like a drug deal happening in a parking lot on U.S. 93 South.

A Ninth Avenue West resident called police to report their dog had gone missing. The caller described the black lab as wearing a blue collar with no tags and “not very bright.” Kalispell Police were able to return the dog in approximately one hour.
