Carol Pollock Kennedy, the woman killed Monday in a crash on Interstate 90 near Anaconda, has been confirmed to be the former co-owner of the Hungry Horse News in Columbia Falls.

Kennedy, 57, of Columbia Falls, and 26-year-old Osiris Munoz Riffo of Woodland Hills, California, died in the crash Sept 28. Riffo was a passenger in the other vehicle.

Kennedy and her ex-husband, Brian, operated the Hungry Horse News for 20 years from 1978 to 1998, and became sole owners in 1987. The Montana Highway Patrol said Kennedy was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes when the two vehicles collided. Kennedy’s car caught fire, the Montana Standard in Butte reported.

Trooper Joseph Fowler said the driver of the second vehicle, a 25-year-old woman from Van Nuys, California, was hospitalized in critical condition in Butte.

Investigators are still trying to determine why Kennedy was driving on the wrong side of the interstate.
