Hunter wounded by grizzly

GREAT FALLS (AP) — A bow hunter has been wounded during an encounter with a lone grizzly bear in north-central Montana.

Mike Madel, a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks grizzly bear management specialist, said the man is expected to recover from wounds to his head and legs.

Madel said the encounter occurred about 8:20 a.m. Saturday on private land in the Muddy Creek drainage about 20 miles northwest of Choteau.

He said the hunter came upon the grizzly in its day bed in dense, riparian cover along the Rocky Mountain Front. The man was hunting elk with his brother.

Madel said the brothers had separated when the encounter occurred. The injured hunter was able to walk away after the encounter and call for his brother.

The incident is still under investigation.
