Cross country: Gray leads Whitefish girls to cross country invitational title
WHITEFISH — With just divisional and state meets left on the cross country schedule, Whitefish coach Sarah Brist was very encouraged by the performance of her girls on Saturday at the Whitefish Invitational.
Led by runner-up Barrett Gray, the Bulldogs had five girls in the top 13 places.
“Today they did a really good job,” Brist said.
“We needed to get our times closer together and it was good to see they have been working on that. The girls ran well.”
Gray finished the 3-mile race in 19 minutes, 44 seconds.
Kimberly Earhart of Plains was the individual winner in 19:28.
They were the only girls to break 20 minutes.
Whitefish’s Sarah Perez, 21:15, was fifth, Braya Hobson, 21:15, sixth, Laurel Davidson, 21:55, 10th and Annika Gordon, 22:25, 13th.
That grouping allowed Whitefish to run off with the team title with a score of 27.
Columbia Falls, 52, was second with Libby, 93, third.
Genevieve Delorme led Columbia Falls, placing fourth, 21:14.
Lauren Thorstenson of Libby was seventh, 21:36 and McKay Guckenberg of Eureka was ninth, 21:51.
On the boys side, Sage Wanner set another fast pace to take home the individual title with a time of 16:40. He finished 22 seconds ahead of the field.
Jamie Good of Eureka was fourth, 17:11,
Ethan Potthoff of Whitefish was eighth, 17:47.
Frenchtown, with three runners in the top 11 spots, claimed team honors with a 45 score.
Thompson Falls , 53, was second and Ronanb, 85, third.
“Ethan Potthoff had a good race,” Brist said for her boys.
Overall, however, she said the team is still “a work in progress.”
The event drew nearly 300 runners, making this invitational the largest to date for Whitefish.
“A good turnout of kids,” Brist said.
“(The school course) is flat, it’s fast.”
The Western A divisional will take place next Saturday In Polson.
The state cross country meet follows Oct. 24 in Great Falls.
