Football roundup: Glacier upends C.M. Russell; Polson, Bigfork, Eureka all earn wins

GREAT FALLS — The Glacier offense found its form in the second half and the defense shut down the game as the Wolfpack outlasted Great Falls C.M. Russell 28-15 on Friday night at Memorial Stadium in Class AA football action.

The Wolfpack (5-2), up 7-0 at the half, scored three touchdowns in the final half. Thomas Trefney scored on a 1-yard run and hauled in a 63-yard pass from Leif Ericksen for another score.

Ericksen finished the scoring with a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.

CMR outgained Glacier 479-355.

Trefney rushed for 122 yards on 26 carries.

Ericksen was 14 of 25 passing for 203 yards.

For CMR (4-3), Andrew Grinde rushed 25 times for 154 yards. Quarterback Lane Jensen completed 20 of 32 passes for 273 yards.

Polson 28, Butte Central 14

POLSON — Two touchdowns in the opening quarter helped Polson defeat Butte Central in a Class A nonconference matchup.

Quarterback Tanner Wilson hit Matthew Rensvold for a 32-yard touchdown and Colton Cote followed with a 1-yard scoring run to get the ball rolling for the Pirates.

Polson (3-3) never trailed and added two more scores in the second half — a 2-yard run by Rensvold and a 61-yard jaunt by Wilson.

Wilson finished with 19 carries for 175 yards. He completed 10 of 21 passes for 227 yards.

Rensvold had four receptions for 120 yards.

The Polson defense intercepted four passes.

“We played real well,” Polson coach Scott Wilson said.

“It was a good win coming off a tough loss last weekend. Hopefully we can gain some momentum from this.”

LIBBY — Bigfork (3-3, 1-1) rolled to four touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a District 7B conference blowout of Libby (0-6, 0-3).

The Vikings finished with 320 yards of offense.

Matthew Farrier had touchdown runs of 51 and 6 yards for Bigfork. He rushed for 102 yards on nine attempts.

Jonathan Landon had a touchdown reception and threw for another score for the Vikings.

Adam Jordt scored on a 37-yard pass from Landon and returned a punt 65 yards for another touchdown.

Libby’s Brian Peck completed 10 of 25 passes for 44 yards.

Eureka 48, Troy 16

EUREKA — Austyn Sherwood threw for 224 yards and five touchdowns to lead Eureka to a 7B conference rout of Lincoln County rival Troy.

Sherwood connected on four touchdown passes in the first half as the Lions (2-4, 2-1) built 461 yards of total offense. Jacob Nowakowski caught a pair of passes and Brenton Pluid caught one and ran 11 yards for another for Eureka.

Troy star Sean Opland broke free for two scores, the longest on a 65-yard touchdown run, finishing with 173 yards rushing in the Trojans’ (1-5, 1-1) loss.

“Our kids put together a great effort,” Eureka coach Trevor Utter said.

“They dominated every phase of the game.

“Troy has an amazing player in Sean Opland,” Utter added.

“He got loose one time. Other than that, our guys shut him down.”
