Soccer: Hellgate tops Braves, Bravettes

MISSOULA — Ryan Sayler scored two goals while Peter Vandam had a goal and an assist as Missoula Hellgate blanked Flathead 4-0 in Western AA boys soccer action on Saturday.

Flathead (1-0-1) was limited to four shots on goal.

Braves keeper Jordan Buxton had six keeper saves.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Justin McGowen and Ansel Braydon both had two goals to lift Belgrade over Columbia Falls in Class A nonconference play.

“Best team in the state, without a doubt,” Columbia Falls coach O’Brien Byrd said of Belgrade.

Columbia Falls (0-2) had three freshmen in the starting lineup for this one.

“We improved on yesterday’s performance,” Byrd said.

“As long as we can keep improving, that’s all we can ask for.”

CORVALLIS — Defending Class A state champion Corvallis put forth an impressive performance in downing Whitefish.

Corvallis had four goals in the first half and five in the second half.

Whitefish lost keeper Sam Benkelman to a leg injury early in the match while making a save.

“They were certainly the stronger and more aggressive team,” Whitefish coach John Lacey said of Corvallis.

BIGFORK — Hugo Schyberg opened the season with a hat trick and Shane Rieke added another goal as Bigfork thumped Frenchtown in a Northern A match.

Schyberg had two goals in the first half and closed the scoring with a goal in the 78th minute.

“I’m proud of the boys,” Bigfork coach Joe Feise said.

“We have 11 boys and all played very well, worked well as a team.”

POLSON — Andrew Hanson scored at 79 minutes to give Polson the Class A nonconference victory over Livingston.

It was Hanson’s first goal of the season.

“We played well, dominated the first half,” Polson coach Adam Fansher said.

“I was pleased with our attacking play. Playing two matches in two days is very difficult.”

Fansher said his team “struggled after the weather delay in the second half.”

MISSOULA — Flathead (1-1) avoided the shutout by scoring in the 57th minute on a shot by Stephanie Wilson in a Western AA matchup with Missoula Hellgate.

Hellgate held a slight edge in shots on goal, 11-9.

The Knights did all of their scoring early with two goals in the first half from 10 and 12 yards out.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Columbia Falls had plenty of chances, just couldn’t finish in settling for a scoreless tie with Belgrade in a Class A nonconference matchup.

“We have to finish,” Columbia Falls coach Greg Trenerry said.

“We had some close ones. You have to put one in to win. Our defense played really well.”

Columbia Falls outshot Belgrade on goal 15-5.

Allyson Gimbel had five keeper saves for the Wildkats (1-0-1).

“We gotta score, we gotta finish,” Trenerry emphasized.

“It was a learning experience.”

CORVALLIS — Whitefish blasted the Corvallis goal with 27 shots, converting seven times for the easy Class A nonconference victory thanks to the super effort turned in by Haley Nicholson.

The junior forward opened with two goals two minutes apart midway through the first half. She connected again six minutes into the second half and finished it off with a shot off a corner kick in the 80th minute.

If that wasn’t enough, she also assisted on three goals.

“Now teams are aware (of her),” Whitefish coach Roland Benedict said of his standout.

“They know she’s coming.

“She’s been really working on getting other players involved and attacking from different angles.

“It all came together,” he added.

“It was pretty magical. We didn’t let them out of their own half and played some beautiful soccer. It was beautiful to watch.”

Melissa Pollard scored two goals for the Bulldogs.

POLSON — Three second-half goals carried Polson to a Class A nonconference victory over Livingston.

Livingston struck first, scoring in the 11th minute.

Tiara Duford tied the match at 1-1 five minutes before the halftime break.

Ashley Howell scored once and Janessa Taylor twice in the final half for the Pirates.

Polson’s last three goals were during a 10-minute stretch.

“It was a physical, hard-fought battle in the sloppy rain,” Bigfork coach John Lacey said.

“You could tell it was our first game.”
