| September 9, 2015 8:45 PM

Six students from Glacier and Whitefish high schools were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

Glacier High School semifinalists are Sydney Chamberlain, Evan Iddings and Ryker McIntyre. Whitefish High School’s semifinalists are Samuel Benkelman, Katelyn Ehrenberg and Walter Sobba.

They are among approximately 16,000 students who represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors competing for scholarships worth more than $32 million according to a press release.

About 1.5 million juniors entered the scholarship program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors.

To become a finalist, a semifinalist must submit an application that provides information about their academic record, activity participation, leadership abilities, employment and awards received.

About 15,000 students are expected to advance as finalists competing for scholarships.
