The paved portion of the Trail of the Cedars in Glacier National Park will be temporarily closed today as crews finish repaving the popular nature trail.

The boardwalk portion of the trail, as well as the Avalanche Lake Trail are anticipated to remain open throughout most of the paving. Visitors can access the Avalanche Lake trailhead from the Trail of Cedars boardwalk.

The trail’s pavement had deteriorated to the point that it no longer met wheelchair accessibility standards, and the first half of the repaving was completed Sept. 11.

In a press release, the park stated that a non-asphalt polymer is being put over the existing concrete in order to save the time and expense of tearing out the existing asphalt.

The Glacier National Park Conservancy funded much of the material for the repaving project, while HK Contractors and Valley Fence are donating time, labor and equipment.
