GOLF: Libby's Jonny Cielak wins inaugural Spring Swing by two shots
MISSOULA — Libby senior Jonny Cielak shot 2-under par on the front and back nine to shoot a 4-under-par 67 for his round, holding off teammate Ryggs Johnston for medalist honors at the Spring Swing on Friday at the Missoula Country Club.
Libby, competing for the first time in more than a calendar year after dropping down to Class B, was the class of the boys round but didn’t field a full team and finished with no score. Johnston, a freshman and reigning state junior champion, fell behind on the front nine, shooting a 66, only to play 3-under par on the way in to finish at 2-under 69.
Loyola freshman Bucky Crippen finished in third with a 72 to lead the Rams to the team title. Anaconda senior Caleb Stetzner, who won the 2014 Class A state championship in the Copperheads’ last prep season before also making the move down to Class B, finished in fourth with a 76.
Ronan and Townsend tied for second in the team race, each with a combined score of 351, 14 strokes back of host Loyola.
Three Forks ran away with the girls team title, placing four in the top 15 to finish with a combined score of 399 for a 35-stroke victory.
Townsend’s Lynzee Dexter won medalist honors by two strokes with an 87. Thompson Falls’ Brooke Jacobs finished second with an 89.
Libby’s Lily Feeback placed 14th with a round of 108. The Loggers didn’t record a team score.
