SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Glacier goes 3-1 at Great Falls Jamboree

GREAT FALLS — Glacier opened its defense of the Class AA state championship with a 3-1 showing at the Great Falls Jamboree on Saturday.

The Jamboree, which featured 16 softball teams and included all 14 teams in Class AA, is contested under unconventional rules. Each team plays four games and each game lasts either five innings or one hour, whichever comes first. Results do not count toward a team’s overall or conference record

The Wolfpack opened the day with senior star Ali Williams in the circle and squeezed past Great Falls High 1-0. Glacier used pitchers Erin McHugh and Emma Shew in its middle two games, beating Laurel, 8-6 and falling 4-2 to Billings Senior. Williams returned to the circle in the nightcap and the Wolfpack routed Billings West, 8-2.

“The Jamboree is such a good time, just to get some of the nerves out of there and let the kids get in a game situation and play,” Glacier coach Andy Fors said. “We looked a little tight offensively in that opening game but as the day progressed our hitters settled down. In that last game, against a really good team, we had a pretty dang good offensive showing.”

Glacier returns to action Saturday with a pair of games at Kidsports, hosting Great Falls C.M. Russell at noon and Great Falls High at 2 p.m.

Flathead was also at the Jamboree, going 1-3. The Bravettes were forced to use Kylee Beccari in the circle for all four games because of a pair of injuries, but Flathead did manage to defeat Billings Skyview, 8-3, in its third outing of the day. The Bravettes were on the wrong end of decisions against Billings West, Bozeman and Butte.

Flathead hosts Polson Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Boyle Field at the Conrad Complex.

FLORENCE — Bailey Bishop delivered a bases-clearing double in the top of the first inning to give Eureka a short-lived lead against Florence, but there were few other bright spots in a pair of Western B/C conference games.

Eureka (0-3, 0-3 Western B/C) gave up four runs in the bottom of the first inning against Florence and would not score again, watching the Falcons score at least four runs in each of the four innings they came to the plate.

In the first game, Loyola scored 11 times in the fifth inning to put an end to the contest.

Courtney Lemer had three of the Lions’ six hits on the day.

Eureka is back in action on Friday when it hosts St. Ignatius at noon.
