The Elk Hill Fire on the eastern edge of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex was declared fully contained on Friday after 10 inches of snow fell in the area.

The fire had spread quickly to 1,086 acres last weekend. It started April 8 near the North Fork of the Sun River.

A Type II incident command team with 50 fire personnel had been on the fire, but that number had dropped to 20 by late Friday afternoon, at which point the firefighting efforts had racked up $575,000 in costs.

The fire is believed to have started from a camping or warming fire, but the cause is still under investigation.
