TRACK & FIELD: Flathead's Perrin, Glacier's Hill break records in Missoula

MISSOULA — Two of the area’s best distance runners tracked down some big records as some of the state’s best athletes gathered for the Missoula County Public Schools Invitational track and field meet on Saturday.

Flathead senior Jake Perrin broke his older brother’s 3-year-old meet record in the 1,600-meter run by more than three seconds, finishing in 4:16.54, setting the fastest time in the state this year by more than 10 seconds. The Braves easily took the team title at the meet, besting Columbia Falls in second. Glacier finished fourth.

Younger brother Ben Perrin, a freshman for the Braves, won the 3,200 with the fastest time run in the state this year, shaving 19 seconds off his previous best time this season to finish in 9:41.42. Columbia Falls junior Sage Wanner finished fourth, setting a state qualifying mark in the process.

Columbia Falls’ Tanner Dana was blazing fast at the meet, winning the 100 and 200 and finishing third in the 400, qualifying for state in the latter with a time of 51.35.

Glacier’s Aaron Robinson won the 110 and 300 hurdles, setting season best times in each and qualifying for state in the 110. He also finished third in the long jump with a season-best leap of 21-4.

Polson’s Jacob Clairmont won the pole vault by clearing 13-6 and set season-best marks in the 110 hurdles, where he finished second, and the long jump, in which he set a state-qualifying mark of 21-0.

Whitefish senior Luke May topped his season best mark in the javelin by nearly two feet, winning the event with a throw of 186-11. Columbia Falls’ Dakota Bridwell finished second with a season-best throw of 179-2.

Flathead’s Micah Bucy finished second in the high jump, clearing 6-2, and Braves teammate Andy Thomas tied for third at 6-0. Braves junior Jaden Anderson qualified for state in the 800 with a second place finish in 2:00.10, the fastest time on the team this season.

Glacier’s Nathan Hammer finished second and Flathead’s Josh McCracken third in the shot put.

Columbia Falls won the 1,600 relay, but missed a qualifying mark by 0.44 seconds. Glacier’s team finished third in the event.

Glacier sophomore Annie Hill continued her assault on the state’s record books by claiming a 10-year-old record in the 800, beating it by three seconds to finish in 2:13.04, shaving a full second off her time from four days ago. The Glacier girls finished third.

Glacier’s Bailey Smith was fourth in the 800 and Flathead’s Gillian Maness sixth, each qualifying for state in the event. Maness also finished second in the 3,200, setting a season-best time.

Flathead sophomore Kaitlin Wride shaved nine seconds off her season best time to finish second in the 1,600 in 5:16.09. Bravettes teammate Lizzie Sherwood bested her top throw of the season by nearly three feet to finish third in the javelin with a toss of 119-11.

The Glacier girls won the 1,600 relay as Columbia Falls finished fourth. Wofpack junior Abi Fiske qualifyed for state in the triple jump, finishing third with a leap of 34-9.25.

Columbia Falls’ Allyson Gimbel won the shot put with a toss of 37-7. Polson’s Erin Sampson qualified for state in the event, finishing second at 34-6.75. Glacier’s Melanie Gassaway was third and Flathead’s Liz Lorentz fourth.

Wildkats senior Ashley Caffrey cleared 10 feet to win the pole vault. Glacier’s JoJo Sherman finished third.

Whitefish’s Allie Schulz qualified for state in the 100 hurdles, finishing third in 16.37 seconds and Bulldogs teammate Kate Doorn qualified in the high jump with a fifth place mark of 5 feet.
