WEDNESDAY BRIEFS: Gus Thompson game Saturday; college golf tourneys feature locals
Gus Thompson Memorial ballgame next Saturday
Kalispell Pee Wee Baseball and the Friends of Thompson Memorial Park will hold the second annual Gus Thompson Memorial Spring Game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 23 at Thompson Memorial Park on Kalispell’s east side. This year’s competitors will be the Twisted Bliss and Grachek Insurance teams.
Gus Thompson, known as the “Father of Kalispell Baseball,” was a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series in 1903 and a long-time Kalispell resident and businessman. He was the organizer and player/manager of early-day Kalispell adult baseball teams and dedicated supporter of youth baseball. The city park which was re-named and dedicated in his honor last year is located on Eight Avenue East and Ninth Street East.
Those attending the game are reminded to bring their own seating. The Sunriser Lions Club will serve hot dogs and the Elks Club will provide drinks.
Rocky women, LC St. men win Frontier golf titles
TEMPE, Ariz. — The Rocky Mountain College women, led by medalist winner Kyla Clancy, won the Frontier Conference golf title on Wednesday at Arizona State University’s Karsten Golf Club.
Clancy, a former Griz golfer from Park City, Montana, won the tournament by six strokes with a three-round total of 16-over-par 232 to top University of Great Falls’ Gina Kowalchuk, who closed the tournament with a 1-under round of 71, the only woman to shoot under par for a round in the tournament. The Rocky women outpaced Lewis-Clark State by 11 strokes for the team title.
Polson’s Jaylin Kenney, a sophomore for Carroll College, finished in 15th at 54-over, fourth for the Saints to help the team to a third-place finish.
The LC State men topped Rocky by six strokes for the team title. Carroll sophomore Greg Jones (Glacier) tied for 18th with two other teammates and Saints senior Michael Lavin (Flathead) finished in 24th as Carroll finished in fifth as a team.
MSU-B men finish sixth at GNAC golf
Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — The Montana State-Billings men’s golf team fell off the pace early and couldn’t keep pace at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference golf championships at Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course on Tuesday.
Kalispell’s Scott Larson (Glacier), a freshman for the Yellowjackets, finished in 28th at 24-over 237 for the three-round tournament, closing with a 4-over 75. Connor Miele led the Jackets in a tie for 14th at 6-over.
Western Washington won the men’s tournament, finishing with three golfers in the top six finishers, led by medalist Brett Johnson at 10-under-par.
Simon Fraser won the women’s team title, led by medalist Michelle Waters. Townsend’s Bailee Dexter finished in sixth place as the top finisher for MSU-Billings, which finished sixth as a team.
Idaho women win Big Sky golf
BOULDER CITY, Nev. — Sophie Hausmann shot 2-under-par on the final day at Boulder Creek Golf Club on Wednesday to finish in a tie for first at the Big Sky Championships and help her Idaho teammates to a one-stroke victory over Sacramento State on the final day of play. Hausmann would shoot a par on the first playoff hole to take the individual championship as well, defeating Eastern Washington’s Marissa Borja.
Borja had come from two strokes back entering the final round to force the playoff. Both finished at 4-under-par 212 for the three-day tournament.
Montana State’s Jaylee Tait finished in third place at even par 216. The Montana State women finished in seventh place, one spot ahead of Montana, which finished 11 strokes back in a tie for eighth with Northern Colorado.
Dawson softball wins Mon-Dak title
GLENDIVE — The Dawson Community College softball team won the Mon-Dak Conference title by sweeping a doubleheader against rival Williston (N.D.) State.
The Buccaneers hold a record of 25-7 this season and will likely receive a No. 1 seed in the Region XIII Conference tournament held on May 1 in Rosemont, Minnesota, hosted by Dakota County Technical College.
Kalispell’s Cassidy Smith and Lyndsey Potter are sophomores for the Bucs and Polson’s Taylor Brackey is a freshman.
Mission Valley 3-on-3 announces tournament dates
RONAN — Mission Valley 3-on-3 basketball has announced the dates of its three tournaments this summer, with Bigfork’s sixth annual Battle in the Bay kicking off the festivities on July 9 at Bigfork HIgh School.
Plains will host its first 3-on-3 tournament this summer, the Plains Wild Horse Shootout, benefitting Wildhorse Sports Associations on July 16.
The 21st annual Ronan Pioneer Days “Jam”boree 3-on-3 will be held August 6 at Ronan High School.
