SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Glacier blasts Broncs in battle of state champs

FRENCHTOWN — Glacier put Frenchtown away late in a battle of defending state champions on Tuesday, routing the Broncs 10-1.

Tied at 1-1 after the first inning, Glacier and pitcher Ali Williams shut down the defending Class A champions, holding the Broncs to just one hit for the game.

Williams was 2 for 4 from the plate with a home run and threw 16 strikeouts and only two walks in the circle in another brilliant performance for the Wolfpack. Christine Connolly was 2 for 2 with a homer and Alivia Atlee 2 for 3 with a home run as a field of five Wolfpack batters each had two hits.

Brooke Yarnall was the only batter with a hit for the Broncs.

POLSON — Laurel Bitterman and Quinn Motichka helped Polson score five runs in the first inning of a Northwestern A victory against Whitefish, each with RBIs in the big first inning.

Bitterman roped a bases loaded single and Motichka a two-run double later in the inning that saw the Pirates take full control early on. Polson junior Hannah Fryberger hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to seal the win.

Whitefish got on the board with a pair of big hits late. McKenzie Carl smoked a double in the fourth inning to score the first run for the Bulldogs and Michaela McDowell hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

Fryberger finished 1 for 1 with four RBIs in the contest. McDowell was 1 for 3 with two RBIs for Whitefish.

“It was a good game for both teams,” Polson coach Larry Smith said. “I was extremely impressed with Whitefish’s improvement. They’ve completely climbed the ladder. Their kids were very aggressive with the bat and forced us to make the outs. They can hit.”

EUREKA — Libby combined for 26 hits in a pair of blowout wins against Western B/C rival Eureka.

In the first game, a conference matchup, the Loggers had 10 runs in the fourth inning to pull away in a 20-0 victory. Khalyn Hageness held the Lions to just two hits and Loggers shortstop Madisen Monigold was 3 for 5 from the plate with a double and five RBIs in the win. Taryn Luscher added two doubles and four RBIs for Libby.

Courtney Lemer and Bailey Bishop each had hits for Eureka.

Eureka hung close in the exhibition nightcap, compiling six hits, but gave up 11 runs in the fifth inning to lose 15-1.

Samantha Miller was 2 for 4 from the plate with a double and two RBIs to lead the Loggers.

Aiyana Twigg had a double and Ambryn Smith a triple to lead the Lions.
