MISSOULA — Big Sky senior Macey Newbary picked up just the third hit of the day for her team, hitting in teammate Natalie Schwab in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Glacier 1-0 in a Western AA softball game on Thursday.

The run proved the only one needed in a pitching duel between the two powerhouse programs. Big Sky’s Kaylee Rosenbaum threw a complete game, three-hit shutout in the win to counter a three-hit pitching performance from Glacier’s Ali Williams.

Glacier won the first meeting of the season, a rematch of last season’s Class AA title game, 7-1 with Williams tossing 17 strikeouts.

“We felt like we had a lot of opportunities (against Big Sky),” Glacier coach Andy Fors said.

“We stranded nine baserunners and so to go seven innings with nine baserunners on and not be able to come up with a run that was kind of frustrating. We didn’t hit the ball real well. Credit to Big Sky and credit to their pitcher for keeping us off balance, but we have to be able to make sure that we don’t miss those opportunities.

“I think part of it is just coming up with that timely hit. In those situations, when we have runners in scoring position, we need to have more of a sense of urgency at the plate and take advantage when we can. I think we have to find a way to capitalize on those baserunners.”

Glacier rebounded with a 5-0 win over Sentinel in its nightcap, picking up eight hits in the win. Williams allowed only one hit against the Spartans.

Alivia Atlee led the Wolfpack from the plate, going 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in the win. Atlee also had one of three hits for the Pack in the loss to Big Sky.
