A 53-year-old man drowned Thursday after tipping his kayak over on Flathead Lake near Bigfork.

The victim, identified as Musa Rashid of Sugar Land, Texas, was vacationing with family members in Bigfork when Rashid and others in the group decided to go kayaking, according to Flathead County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Chuck Curry reported that Rashid was initially wearing a life jacket, but took it off at some point. Rashid’s kayak tipped over approximately 100 yards from shore. He attempted to swim to shore but was unable to make it.

People responding to calls for help recovered Rashid’s body in about 12 feet of water, according to Curry. Bigfork Ambulance transported Rashid to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, but medical personnel were unable revive him.
