WEEKEND UPDATE: Nurturing Center yard sale

The Nurturing Center in Kalispell is having a yard sale this weekend. The sale begins at 8:30 a.m. today and Saturday. Proceeds will go directly toward the center’s programs and services for local families and child care providers.

Festival Amadeus

Glacier Symphony and Chorale’s Festival Amadeus student concert will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. today at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center, featuring the full orchestra and ensembles. This concert is free and the public is invited.

Other performances scheduled this weekend during Festival Amadeus:

• Today: 7:30 p.m. Orchestra Night 2: Baroque Extravaganza.

• Saturday: 7:30 p.m. Orchestra Night 3: Mozart’s Clarinet, Haydn’s London

• Sunday: Orchestra Night 4: Schumann Pastoral Finale

Field trip

Flathead Audubon and Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks host a field trip from 8:30 to 11 p.m. this evening to learn more about bats in the Flathead Valley.

Participants will be guided to a site by wildlife biologists Lewis Young, Lisa Bate and Chris Hammond, who will have electronic equipment to detect the ultrasonic calls of bats flying overhead. They will handle bats captured in mist nets and talk about the adaptations bats have for navigating, catching food and hibernating. Participants will not be allowed to touch or handle bats.

Call Young at 406-889-3492 to sign up and get directions to the meeting site. Headlamps or flashlights are necessary. The field trip is free and all are welcome.


Huckleberry Days

The 27th annual Huckleberry Days Arts Festival in Whitefish takes place this weekend in Depot Park, with more than 100 vendors of fine art and food, a huckleberry dessert bake-off contest, mobile climbing wall for adults and kids, and a full schedule of live entertainment Saturday and Sunday.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Other highlights:

• Today — Glacier Bank Whitefish is giving away Sweet Peaks huckleberry ice cream at its downtown location beginning at 10 a.m. until it’s gone.

• Saturday — Huckleberry pancake and sausage feed from 7 a.m. to noon at the Mountain Mall parking lot and dessert bake-off from 9:30 a.m. to noon.


Swan Lake fest

The 35th annual Swan Lake Huckleberry Festival takes place Saturday at the Swan Lake Day Park near mile marker 72 on Montana 83.

A pancake breakfast is at 8 a.m. The arts and crafts fair features more than 50 vendors of handicrafts, gifts, Montana-made products and food.

There will also be huckleberry baked goods sale, kids’ activities and games, silent auction, grand prize drawing, split-the-pot and raffles.

The Ashley Creek Ramblers featuring Roy Wilhelm play from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.


Summerfest

Summerfest on Flathead Lake is this weekend in Polson.

A poker run takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. today followed by live music and dancing from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Finley Point Grill. Saturday’s car show and the Sandpiper Art Show both open at 9 a.m. The car show will be on Main Street and the art festival is on the Courthouse Lawn. Saturday is also Family Fun Day with family and water activities scheduled.

Skydiving

The 49th annual Lost Prairie Boogie continues through Sunday at Carson Field in Marion west of Kalispell.

Meadow Peak Skydiving hosts the annual skydiving event in the Lost Prairie Valley of Northwest Montana.

Flights take off from Carson Field, an adjoining private airstrip for tandem skydives that drop from 9,000 feet above the West Valley.

Camping is available. A hosted barbecue with free beer is offered for all registered jumpers and campers Saturday evening.

Meadow Peak is located at 10260 Lost Prairie Road in Marion, west of Kalispell. Traveling westbound on U.S. 2, turn right on Lost Prairie Road (between mile markers 87 and 88) and take the road for approximately 4.5 miles. The facility is on the right.

Pancake breakfast

The Big Arm Association hosts a community pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Big Arm School.

The menu includes freshly made pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, juice and coffee included; donations will be appreciated. For more information, call Nancy Foster at 406-849-5064.


Free breakfast

Dr. Tom Pittaway and his staff at Plaza West Dental host a free chuckwagon breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Pancakes, sausage, eggs, orange juice, milk, coffee and more will be served and all are welcome.

The office is located at 124 First Ave. W., in Kalispell across from 406 Bar and Grill.


Mansion tour

The Conrad Mansion Museum offers a Nooks and Crannies Tour at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The 90-minute specialty tour takes guests through areas of the museum not accessible on regular tours. View secret compartments and areas behind closed doors.

The cost is $28 per person, and $25 for members. Reservations are required. Call 755-2166.

RV campout

Rocky Mountain Rollers Good Sam RV Chapter hosts its August Campout today and Saturday and the Little Bitterroot (Lions) Campground, 1650 Pleasant Valley Road in Marion.

A chapter meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by a potluck meal at noon.
