Fall construction projects begin next month in Glacier National Park.

The segment of roadway between the two entrances into the St. Mary Visitor Center parking area will be closed for construction from Sept. 19 this year to May 26, 2017.

Traffic will be detoured through the St. Mary Visitor Center parking areas. Fees will be collected in the visitor center during the construction period when Going-to-the-Sun Road is open to travel.

From Oct. 17 through May 26, Going-to-the-Sun will be closed to vehicular traffic on the east side, starting at the 1.5-mile gate. Hikers and bicyclists can use the newly reconstructed pathway near the St. Mary Visitor Center to access the road beyond the vehicle closure.

On Sept. 6, the southern portion of the Trail of the Cedars between Sun Road and the Avalanche Trailhead will be closed so work can begin on the Avalanche Creek footbridge. The boardwalk portion of the trail leading to the trailhead will remain open.

On Sept. 20, the roadway into Avalanche Campground will close to all public traffic. Because a segment of the boardwalk will be removed to access construction operations, this portion of the Trail of the Cedars will be closed during construction.

Repair work also began this week on three segments of the stone guard wall along Sun Road between Triple Arches and Oberlin Bend. Visitors should plan on 15-minute delays with one-lane traffic control during daylight hours and traffic lights at night.

Both lanes of travel will be open on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3-5. After Labor Day, those sections of road will return to single-lane status. Construction on the walls will continue as long as weather permits.
