The city of Whitefish will hold an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, to provide information about the proposed new wastewater treatment facilities recommended in a draft preliminary engineering report.

The new facilities are projected to cost about $17.5 million.

The meeting will beheld at the interim City Hall at 1005 Baker Ave.

The new facilities will bring the city into compliance with existing and new regulatory standards as well as replace older portions of the existing wastewater treatment plant.

New treatment standards for removal of ammonia, nitrogen and phosphorous were included in the new regulatory permit authorizing the discharge from the plant.

The engineering report considers alternatives to address the existing discharge permit as well as position the city for anticipated new limits proposed by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality for the next five and 10 years, respectively.

Sustainable treatment technologies are being evaluated and plans to address existing nuisance issues associated with the existing plant will be incorporated into all feasible alternatives under consideration. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2021.

Grants and low interest loans are being pursued to help support the project costs, according to city officials.

A presentation will be made by the engineer and ample time will be allowed for public questions and comment.

The draft report is available at the Public Works Department for public review.
