Flathead has an estimated enrollment of 1,450 students this school year.

• New to Flathead academics is a Community School where students will apply academic skills and knowledge to practical projects through service learning in community-based placements. Medical Interventions will be introduced as the third course in a series for the BioMedical Science program. In this course, students will investigate how to prevent, diagnose and treat disease along with detecting infection, among other topics. International Baccalaureate Language and Literature also will be offered. This is the first year in a two-year sequence for the course, which focuses on cultural context, language, and audience influence meanings in various texts and how the forms of mass communication impact various objectives of texts. Global Politics is a class designed to help students understand abstract political concepts by grounding them in real-world examples and case studies.

• New teachers are Tricia Dean, English; Stephanie Girardot, math; and David Johnke, band.

• School pictures for grades 9, 10 and 11 will be taken Sept. 14 and 15 in the high school auditorium foyer. If a student does not plan to purchase a class picture, he or she will still need to have a photo taken to receive a student ID and be included in the yearbook. Senior portraits for the yearbook are due Nov. 18.

• A parent meeting will be Sept. 7.

• An open house and family night barbecue are from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 14.
