Basketball roundup: Wolfpack can't wrangle Rustlers

The Glacier girls dropped their opening game of the season on Saturday, falling to Great Falls C.M. Russell 49-41 at home in a nonconference Class AA basketball game.

Glacier hung close all game but couldnÆt quite catch up to the Rustlers, falling behind by five points at half and nine after three quarters.

Kali Gulick led the Wolfpack in the post, scoring 12 points. There was little, however, to relieve the pressure in the paint, Glacier making just one 3-pointer.

Addison Gardner led CMR with 20 points and Choteau transfer Tristin Achenbach had 12 points and a game-high six rebounds in the win.

Kylee Meredith drove for a layup as time expired, lifting Flathead to a nonconference Class AA victory over Great Falls High.

ôThat was all the girls,ö Bravettes coach Tricia Dean said. ôKylee went strong to the basket, which was perfect for what the defense gave her.

ôThey just kept fighting. Obviously we had some mistakes, but they didnÆt give up.ö

Tiana Johnson led the team with 23 points.

MISSOULA ù Columbia Falls shut down Hamilton in the third quarter to create some separation in a hard-fought victory.

Leading just 29-25 at half, the Wildkats held Hamilton to eight points in the third quarter, exploding for 16 of their own to pull out to a comfortable lead.

Kiara Burlage had a game-high 24 points and Peyton Kehr had 12 to lead Columbia Falls.

Kaelyn Smith led Polson with 16 points. Mollie Fisher had 12 and Lauren Lefthand 10 for the Pirates.

GREAT FALLS ù Tadan Gilman scored 18 points and Jaxen Hashley had 17 points and eight rebounds for Glacier as the Wolfpack opened their season with a nonconference Class AA victory over Great Falls C.M. Russell.

The Wolfpack led 22-8 after the first quarter, taking advantage of a CMR squad that had a quick turnaround after a three-overtime thriller in a loss to Flathead on Friday night.

Hashley, who missed all of last season with a knee injury after an all-state sophomore season, looked to be back in form with a dominant performance in the post. Gilman was 4-for-6 from 3-point range and had five rebounds, four assists and four steals to fill out the stat sheet in the win.

GREAT FALLS ù After a long game and a short night on Friday, the Flathead boys couldnÆt keep pace with Great Falls High on the road, dropping their first game of the season.

The Braves (2-1) stayed within shooting distance until halftime, falling well back in the last two quarters. Flathead eked out a three-overtime win over CMR in Kalispell on Friday night before making the trip for an afternoon game in central Montana.

Sam Elliott had a team-high 13 points for Flathead.

MISSOULA ù Polson scorched Corvallis in the second quarter, running away with a nonconfernce victory at the Western A Tipoff tournament.

The Pirates, leading by two after the opening quarter, outscored Corvallis 22-6 in the second to explode to a 34-16 halftime advantage. Polson continued the onslaught in the second half to turn the game into a rout.

Matthew Rensvold had 19 points and Jeremiah North Piegan had 16 to lead Polson in the win.
