Fusion hosts Winter Classic this weekend

The ninth annual U-19 girls’ Winter Classic hockey tournament begins today at Woodland Ice Center, featuring four teams from around the Northwest.

The local Flathead Fusion begins three-day tournament with a game a 4 p.m. today between against Coeur d’Alene. The Fusion will play at 9 a.m. on Friday against Salmon, Idaho and at 6 p.m. against Missoula.

The tournament championship is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday. Spectators are welcome for all games and admission is free.

The Fusion U19 girls will host the Moscow (Idaho) Polar Bears at the Stumptown Ice Den in Whitefish on Jan. 7 at 10:45 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Glacier, Flathead to hold cheer camps in February

Flathead and Glacier high schools will hold cheerleading camps for girls ages 6 and older in February.

Glacier will hold its camp on Feb. 4 from 1-4 p.m., with participants holding a performance at halftime of the varsity basketball game later that day. The Wolfpack camp will be held in the Glacier gymnasium and instructed by Glacier High cheerleaders.

Flathead will hold its camp on Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a performance during the varsity basketball game later in the day. The camp will be held in the small gym at Flathead and instructed by Flathead cheerleaders.

The cost for each camp is $46 and includes a T-shirt. Any tickets to the varsity game for parents or family are not included. Kids are asked to bring a snack and water for the camp.

Learn to Skate at Woodland Ice

Kalispell Parks and Recreation will host the second of four sessions teaching kids ages 4 and older to ice skate beginning Jan. 3 at Woodland Ice Center.

There are four learning groups, for beginners ages 4-6, beginners 7 and older, basic skaters ages 4-6 and those with basic levels ages 7 and older. Sessions are broken into four lessons between Jan. 3-12, held on Tuesday and Thursday. The fee for the entire session is $51 with rentals available for free. Helmets are mandatory.

The sessions for beginners run from 3:50-4:15 p.m. and for basic skaters from 4:20-4:45 p.m. on both Tuesday and Thursday.

The third of four sessions this winter will be held Jan. 17-26 and the last session from Jan. 31 to Feb. 9, all on the same schedule.
