WRESTLING: Flathead qualifies Class AA-best 22 for state tournament

MISSOULA — Flathead showed off its depth Saturday at the Western AA divisional seeding tournament, advancing 22 wrestlers to this week’s state tournament, more than any other Class AA school.

The Braves will have grapplers in all 13 weight classes at state, and boast two combatants at nine of those weights. Across town, Glacier will send eight to Billings.

The top eight finishers at each weight class Saturday qualified for the state tournament.

A pair of Flathead wrestlers will be seeded first, including undefeated sophomore Trae Vasquez. The defending 113-pound state champ, Vasquez wrestles at 120 pounds this year and won by decision against Missoula Sentinel’s Cam Hegel in Saturday’s championship match.

Hunter Rush, at 103 pounds, will be the other top-seed for the Braves. The junior pinned Helena’s Isaac Romero just 29 seconds into the final.

Other top three finishers for the Braves included Cody Devall (third, 113), Payton Hume (second, 138), Tucker Nadeau (third, 160), Logan Wilson (third, 182), Payton Boyce (second, 205) and Cody Howe (third, 285).

Glacier’s top finisher Saturday was Tyler Eierdam. He will be seeded fourth at state at 138 pounds.

The Class AA state tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at RimRock Auto Arena at MetraPark in Billings.
