Basketball Roundup: Sentinel trips Flathead boys

Flathead rallied from a slow start to make up 10 points in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough in a 52-46 loss to Western AA conference foe Missoula Sentinel on Thursday at Flathead High School.

Trailing 30-15 at half, the Braves scored 31 points after the break to makeup ground on the Spartans, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Flathead (4-11 overall, 1-6 league) outscored Sentinel 16-6 in the fourth quarter but struggled mightly from deep.

The Braves were 0 of 13 from 3-point range in the contest while Sentinel (7-8, 3-4) made five shots from behind the arc.

Tyler Johnson led Flathead with 15 points and Matthew Marshall had 10 points.

Sam Beighle scored 15 points for the Spartans and Will Mytty had 12 points and six rebounds.

Glacier could not overcome a rough night shooting, falling to Missoula Big Sky (5-2, 10-4) at Glacier High School.

The Wolfpack was 11 of 45 shooting overall, going 2 for 11 from 3-point range.

“The kids played hard,” Glacier coach Mark Harkins said. “We failed to score. We had good shots and missed.”

Alex Simmons led Big Sky with 14 points.

Dylan Ruggles had 10 points for Glacier (4-11, 1-6).

BIGFORK — Jonathan Landon had a key steal in the late going and went 7 of 8 from the free-throw line to help Bigfork (15-1) hold off Polson in a wild nonconference outing.

Landon finished with 22 points.

“He was big for us down the stretch,” Bigfork coach Sam Tudor said of Landon.

Also in double-figure scoring for Bigfork were George Gibson with 19, Anders Epperly with 19 and Adam Jordt with 16.

Matthew Rensvold scored 28 points for Polson (12-4). Julian Jones tallied 17, Payton Lefthand 12 and Jeremiah NorthPiegan 12.

Libby, up 23-9 at the half, outscored Eureka in the second half 40-20.

Sentinel led 20-16 after the first period and 37-22 at the half.

Tiana Johnson tallied 20 points for Flathead (4-11, 0-7).

Kordyn Schweyen and Shannon Worster had 15 points each for Sentinel (15-0, 7-0).

Libby led 16-2 at the half and outscored the Lions 25-15 for the remainder of play.

Trinity Wallace and Shannon Reny shared scoring honors for Libby with 11 points each.

Sienna Utter and Amanda Peterson had five each for Eureka.

Kiara Burlage led the offensive attack for Columbia Falls with 21 points. Sydney Grilley chipped in 15.

Calla Haldorson had 12 points for Corvallis.

BIGFORK — Bigfork jumped on Polson early, taking a 20-6 lead in the opening quarter, en route to an easy nonconference victory.

Bigfork held Polson to one point in the third quarter.

Jaime Berg led the Bigfork attack with 14 points. Lana Berg had 11 points and Rakiah Grende and Miranda Campbell 10 each.

This was Grende’s first action since suffering a heel injury early in the season.

Mattie McAnally had another strong all-around game with five points, six steals and five assists.
