STATE SWIMMING: C-Falls' Babcock leads Wildcats to Class A-B state title

GREAT FALLS — Columbia Falls, led by double-event winner Colton Babcock, captured the Class A-B boys team swimming championship on Saturday at the Great Falls High School pool.

Columbia Falls totaled 93 points to best Billings Central, which finished with 73.

Havre claimed the Class A-B girls team championship with 67 points. Billings Central, 43, was second again.

The Columbia Falls girls and Whitefish boys both finished third.

Babcock won the 50- (21.95) and 100-yard (46.91) freestyle events.

Karyssa Nelson of Columbia Falls finished third in the 50 freestyle (25.47).

The Columbia Falls boys placed third in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Glacier set three school records on the final day.

Nathan Burnham set a new school standard in the 200 freestyle (1:48.44) for boys while the girls broke marks in the 200 (Olivia Gibson, Lauran Harman, Emma Hornby AJ Popp) and 400 (Popp, Malea Bauer, Hornby and Gibson) freestyle relays, finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Burnham finished fourth in the 200 freestyle and was third in the 500 freestyle (5:01.05).

Popp placed third in the 500 freestyle (5:25.04) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:17.5), Gibson was fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.56) and 100 butterfly (1:02.72) and Glacier’s Anthony Clason was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.13).

“Those were the best performances (on Saturday),” Flathead/Glacier swim coach David Lillard said. “We got a lot of third and fourth places.”

He said during Friday’s preliminary heats, Flathead swimmers posted 27 best times to 14 for Glacier.

“Overall, a good meet,” Lillard said.

“The kids swam hard.”

Missoula Hellgate dominated the AA boys and girls meet, easily claiming both titles.

The Glacier girls were fifth and Glacier boys eighth.

The Flathead boys were 14th.
