Sled hockey still planned this weekend at rink
Moving Forward Adaptive Sports will hold its sled hockey practice clinics and tournament on Saturday and Sunday at the Woodland Park ice rink in Kalispell.
Clinics start at 10 a.m. each day and games begin at 2 p.m.
“Our sled hockey program was a part of the Pond Hockey Classic this year, but due to the cancellation [of the pond hockey tournament] we are using the rink for those who have and are still planning on traveling into town,” Moving Forward spokeswoman Starla Barnes said. “Sled Hockey is still on and we have people traveling from Bozeman, Helena, Missoula, Polson, Seattle, Idaho and locals.”
Barnes and her husband, Shannon, started Moving Forward Adaptive Sports two years ago to offer adaptive recreational activities to differently abled and disabled athletes. The nonprofit organization offers adaptive sled hockey, kayaking, ziplining, whitewater rafting, hand-cycling, skiing and horseback riding.
Starla Barnes was paralyzed in a 2009 hit-and-run accident in Kalispell. In November 2015 she and Shannon were injured in another vehicle accident in Denver. They continue to be advocates for disabled athletes.
