LETTER: Small terrorism threat? Really?

| January 1, 2016 11:00 AM

My response to James Conners:

According to Conners’ unbelievable Dec. 27 letter (“Turning U.S. into armed state is wrong response to terrorism”) what the U.S. faces is a “vanishing small threat of Islamic terrorism.” He is concerned that people may protect themselves with guns.

Well, if Mr. Conners does not want to protect himself that’s his right. He does not have the right to tell us how to defend ourselves, however. That way he is thinking and the very bad laws being passed and gun-free zones are why we have this mess in the first place.

There are evil people in this world (and right here in our country) who want to do us harm. That’s a fact. This is why we have a constitutional right to bear arms to protect ourselves and families.

If the people in San Bernadino and other gun-free-zone shootings would have been armed with guns, these tragedies would have never happened. Those killers are cowards and they prey on the helpless unable to fight back.

“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort against tyranny in the government.” These words attributed to Thomas Jefferson have certainly come true today.

Those of us who love God; his son, Jesus; and his commandments and our country believe in peace through strength. The stronger we are, the weaker our enemy will become — we will win without having to fire a shot. I don’t think the loved ones of the lost in San Bernadino feel it was a small Islamic threat, Mr. Conners. I guess it’s only a big threat if it’s one of your family or loved ones. —Monte C.
