James Cone, 91

| July 3, 2016 6:30 AM

James Cone, 91, born March 4, 1925, died peacefully on June 27, 2016, at his home, which he shared with his devoted granddaughter, Sarah, who provided for his care right up to the moment of his passing.

Jim’s military career began in 1941 in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor on the “… day that will live in infamy.” He served just over five years in the U.S. Navy as a machinist mate aboard the USS San Clemente and the USS Shenandoah. He then re-enlisted and served 23 years in the U.S. Air Force.

Jim received numerous wartime and service medals from both branches.

Jim’s career took him and his wife of 51 years, Ruth Ann, to the corners of the globe. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, antique clock repair, old Western and military films and his days in the garden. He was a life member of the VFW Post 2252.

Jim was the last of a “rare breed.”

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann, and his son Russell.

He is survived by son Bill Cone, son Mark Cone, and daughter Lisa Smith; grandchildren Charles Simmons, Paul Simmons, Rachel Hick, Mason Smith, Sarah Smith, Henry Smith, Hiram Smith and Erica Cone.

Jim lived large and encouraged all to do the same.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. July 10 at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. All post members are encouraged to attend.
