BASEBALL: Glacier Twins split at Sapa-Johnsrud tourney
WHITEFISH — The Lethbridge Elks tallied five runs in the top half of the seventh inning to rally by the Glacier Twins 8-7 on Saturday evening at the Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial tournament at Memorial Park.
Glacier looked to be in command until the Elks pulled it out.
The loss left Glacier (29-17) at 1-3 in tournament play.
Tournament play winds up today with seed games for the top four teams at 10 a.m. (Lethbridge (3-1) vs. Butte (2-2) and noon (Spokane Cannons (4-0) vs. Glacier). Those winners advance to the championship game at 3 p.m.
The Spokane Expos went 0-4 in tournament play.
Glacier held a 3-1 lead after the first inning and led 4-2 after four.
Glacier added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-3 advantage.
Both teams had 11 hits. Colten Parker, Vinny Smith and Skylar Warner had two apiece for the Twins.
Parker, Smith and James Sampson-Keck doubled for Glacier.
Earlier in the day, Smith, 3 for 4, doubled twice while Parker and Sampson-Keck both had two hits each to key the Twins offense in a 7-3 win over the Spokane Expos.
Ryan Veneman, 1 for 1, tripled.
Parker, Max Smyley, Sampson-Keck, Tristin Steinwand, Jonny Sapa and Warner had one RBI each.
Smith, who pitched the first four innings, was credited with the win. He gave up six hits, walked six, allowed two runs and did not have a strikeout.
Sapa finished up, getting the final nine outs of the contest.
The Twins scored in every inning but the third for its first tournament win. They lost to the Spokane Cannons 4-3 on Friday and to the Butte Miners 9-1 on Thursday.
