Legion baseball: Lakers A lose 5-4 to Med Hat in Harp tourney final
Medicine Hat, which blew an early 4-0 lead, need a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip by the Kalispell Lakers A 5-4 in the championship game of the John R. Harp Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Griffin Field.
The Lakers (31-15 overall) scored twice in the fourth and sixth innings to tie the American Legion baseball contest at 4-all.
Clayton Jaques, 2 for 2, drove in three runs — two in the fourth and one in the sixth — for the Lakers.
Kalispell pitchers Brady Peiffer, Sam Elliott and Drew Scherrer combined on a 6-hitter. Elliott struck out four batters in his three innings on the mound.
The Lakers came into that contest having won four Harp games — 12-4 over Spokane Ferris and 10-4 over Vauxhall on Friday; and 12-0 over Calgary and 11-10 over Cranbrook on Saturday.
Kalispell returns to league play Wednesday with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. at the Kootenai Valley Rangers A.
“It was a really good tournament,” Lakers coach Jesse McFarland said. “They (players) do a good job of going back-to-back, playing several games in a couple days.”
This was the Lakers third, and final, tournament of the regular season. In those games, Kalispell posted a 12-1 record.
