Not unfamiliar with the spotlight, Libby’s Ryggs Johnston exceeded expectations in his first season of high school athletics. After qualifying for the U.S. Amateur championships in the summer of 2015, the Loggers freshman not only won the Class B state golf championship, he did so with the lowest tournament score in state history. Johnston shot an 8-under-par 63 in the second and final round and his 36-hole score of 131 was five strokes better than the previous state mark.

He won five high school tournaments in 2016, including the divisional championship. Johnston’s athleticism was on display on the hardwood, where he earned first team all-conference in District 7B as a sharp-shooting guard.

Johnston has been a sports star from childhood, and not just on the golf course. In 2014, he made 41 straight free throws at the Elks Hoop Shot national finals in Springfield, Massachusetts, finishing third in the country in his age group. He has twice qualified for the national competition.
