Expectations are already high when your dad is the head coach, but for Flathead’s Trae Vasquez, who was also coming off a state championship on the mat as a freshman, they were expectations Vasquez was more than up to meeting.

The sophomore won the 120-pound state championship to complete a perfect 41-0 season and become the first Flathead wrestler since Sean Lau in 2009-10 to win back-to-back state titles. Vasquez was utterly dominant, including at the state tournament, where he earned four pins in four matches and earned the quick pin award across all weights in Class AA. A quickly blossoming football player, Vasquez also claimed an all-state finish on the track as part of Flathead’s 1,600-meter relay team that finished sixth.

A peerless wrestler, Vasquez also grew into a vital piece of the Braves’ secondary during their resurgent 2015 football season, displaying a knack for snaring interceptions and the quick feet that help make him so dangerous on the mat. He was named an honorable mention all-state cornerback.
