WEEKEND UPDATE: Arts in the Park

The 48th annual Arts in the Park is this weekend at Kalispell Depot Park.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The arts and crafts festival features more than 100 juried artisans, daily live music, delicious local food, beer, wine and children’s activities.

The event is a fundraiser for the Hockaday Museum of Art.

A weekend pass is $5 which includes admission to the Hockaday Museum, located at 302 Second Ave. E. in Kalispell. Daily admission is $3. Children 6 and under are admitted free.


Car show

The Glacier Rally in the Rockies rumbles into downtown Kalispell this weekend.

A show and shine kicks off the car show today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kalispell’s Dairy Queen (19 U.S 2 E.), and continues with an American Graffiti-style “Cruise the Drag” up and down Main Street, from 8 to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, the parade begins at 10 a.m. Vehicles line up on Eighth Street West and continue north on Main Street to Center Street. They will then park on First Avenue West between Center and Third streets, for the show and shine.

Vehicle registration costs $30 per vehicle, and includes registration for the parade, show and shine, and two poker walk tickets. Complete registration forms and the parade route are available on the Flathead CARE website, www.flatheadcare.org.

Forms also may be picked up at the front door of the Flathead CARE office, located at 124 Third Ave. E., at the Linderman Education Center.

All events are free to spectators and are family friendly. Concessions and vehicle registration proceeds will benefit Flathead CARE, a local youth drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention organization.

Pop-Up Program

ImagineIF Library in Kalispell hosts a free Pop-Up Program for children in first through fifth grades from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. today. Explore aerodynamics, wind and flight with the new and improved wind tunnel. Create an experiment using a variety of materials to see what will fly, spin or hover. With interactive activities and engaged helpers, this program encourages kids to have fun while exercising their minds. Registration is not required.

Cherry fest

Polson’s Main Street Flathead Cherry Festival is this weekend. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event features more than 100 vendors offering local arts and crafts, cherry-themed items, Montana-made products, jewelry, garden décor and more, along with a variety of food concessions.

Fresh cherries from local orchards will be for sale, along with homemade Flathead cherry pies and other cherry sweet treats.

Games and contests for children and adults take place each afternoon and include pit spitting, pie eating and judging for the most unique food made with Flathead cherries. The Great Scots Bagpipers will entertain festival-goers on Saturday afternoon.

Kids triathlon

The First Montana Bank Flathead Valley Kids Triathlon for youth ages 4 to 13 is set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Woodland Park in Kalispell.

Children will be divided by age group and compete in swimming, biking and running events.

Haskill Basin

In recognition of Montana Open Land Month, a Haskill Basin celebration is planned from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Depot Park in Whitefish to highlight the value of open land to the Montana way of life, economy and landscape.

U.S. Sens. Steve Daines and Jon Tester will speak at the celebration, held in conjunction with the Trust for Public Land, about the completion of the Haskill Basin Land and Water Conservation Fund and honor Montana conservationist Alex Diekmann by announcing legislation to name an unnamed peak in his memory.

RV campout

The Rocky Mountain Rollers Chapter of the Good Sam RV Club is hosting its annual July Campout this weekend in the Group Camp Area at Lake Mary Ronan State Park.

Camp games and cards are scheduled this afternoon and Saturday. The chapter is sponsoring a fishing derby on Friday, with a fish fry at 1 p.m. Saturday

Fitness camp

Dan Holquin Fitness is offering a free fitness boot camp at 10 a.m. every Saturday in July at Lawrence Park in Kalispell.

Garden tour

A Whitefish Garden Tour is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to benefit Sparrow’s Nest homeless shelter for high school students.

 Tickets are $20 for the tour of four private gardens.

Bigfork artist Lee Proctor will feature displays of his glass and metal lawn art at the Conn Road Farm located at 1919 Conn Road of Montana 40 between Whitefish and Columbia Falls.

Brewfest

The sixth annual Pints for Paths Brewfest, a fundraiser for the Gateway to Glacier Trail, takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Heaven’s Peak Lodge in West Glacier.

The event features craft and microbrew beer from more than 16 breweries, a brewed soda tent with root beer and other brewed sodas, along with ice cream for old-fashioned floats. Live music by local and regional musical artists, plus food vendors will also be part of the event.

 Advance tickets are $15, available at West Glacier Bar, Stonefly Lounge, in Coram, Hungry Horse Liquor Store, and O’Brien’s Liquor, and Freedom Bank in Columbia Falls. Tickets are $20 the day of the event and at the gate.

The Gateway to Glacier Trail is a nonprofit organization whose vision is a separated bike and pedestrian path connecting the Flathead Valley to Glacier National Park.

Live history

Miracle of America Museum in Polson celebrates Live History Days this weekend. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Demonstrations of woodcarving, leatherworking, pine needle weaving, blacksmithing and more will be featured. Old-time music will be played and ride on the trains and military vehicles will be available.

The schoolhouse will feature readings and activities, food and ice cream will be available from the vintage soda fountain, and handmade goods will be for sale in the general store.
