LOCAL ROUNDUP: Local garden tour features seven stops
Mike Thiel’s garden is one of seven gardens featured in the Flathead County Democratic Women’s Garden Tour fundraiser on Saturday, July 23.
In Thiel’s garden, dill, Swiss chard, sunflower, spinach and calendula volunteer plants come up each spring. He either replants in new spots or lets them flourish where they germinated. His garlic is from sets given to him 10 years ago. He will either plant the scapes (two-year process) or use cloves from the current year’s production. He also saves the seeds of cosmos, marigold and snapdragons and his patio geraniums have been over-wintered at least once — the oldest are the Martha Washington plants at five years.
Most of the shrubs and plants around the garden are native to the area and selected for bird habitat.
Robben Leingang’s Moondog Garden Orchard in Bigfork is another featured garden on the tour.
This year’s tour showcases various types of gardens — a newly planted garden, a garden featuring many dwarf and various specimens of plants and flowers, interesting combinations of flower and vegetable gardens, interesting rock work and more. One garden features driftwood from Flathead Lake.
The tour features gardens on the east side of Kalispell as well as in newer housing developments outside the city and one overlooking Flathead Lake.
Hours for the self-guided garden tour are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Advance tickets are $20, available by calling 253-7880. Tickets will be available the day of event at 501 Fourth Ave. E., Kalispell.
