HELENA (AP) — A Phillips County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man Wednesday morning during a confrontation along U.S. 191 southwest of Malta.

The Montana Department of Justice says the deputy was stabbed several times and was being treated at a Great Falls hospital. The injured deputy is Alan Guderjahn. He is in stable condition.

The department says the officer responded to a call about a suspicious man walking along the highway early Wednesday. When the deputy confronted the man, the suspect attacked and stabbed him. The deputy shot and killed the suspect.

The man's name, age and hometown have not been released.

The state's Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating. The Department of Transportation expects the road to be closed most of the day, so travelers are urged to consider an alternate route.
