BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Glacier Twins beat Vipers; Lakers A swept in DH

BELGRADE — Max Smyley singled in the last of five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Glacier Twins to an 8-7 victory over Eagle (Idaho) at the Boys of Summer Invitational on Friday morning.

Smyley was 2 for 3 from the plate, the most important hit pushing Glacier over the top after it fell behind 7-3 entering its final three outs. A.J. Wetsch, Tyler Murphy, Colten Parker and Tristin Steinwand all scored before Smyley’s shot to right field scored Jesse Walburn from third base.

The Twins racked up 12 hits in the contest, including five in the final inning. Glacier scored three runs in the first inning but stranded four baserunners before clawing back in the final frame.

James Sampson-Keck shined for the Twins, going 3 for 4 from the plate with two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Parker picked up the win in relief, closing out the seventh inning.

Rangers sweep Lakers A

Kootenai Valley got a pair of strong pitching performances and swept a doubleheader from the Kalispell Lakers A at Griffin Field.

Sam Hannay scattered eight hits in a complete game to lead the Rangers to a 5-2 win in the opener. Mo Henderson went the distance in the nightcap, allowing just five hits in a 3-1 victory.

Kootenai Valley scored three times in the third inning of the opener and held on from there. They tallied five times on just five hits and took advantage of a couple Lakers errors.

In the second game, Hannay went 2 for 4 at the plate and the Rangers again used a three-run inning, this time in the fifth, to earn the victory.

Mariners win pair

DILLON — Walter Wood fired five shutout innings in the morning, then drove in three runs in the afternoon to lead the Mission Valley Mariners A to a pair of wins at the Maybelle Arthur tournament.

Wood’s pitching led the Mariners to a 2-0 victory over the Bitterroot Red Sox B early in the day. Mission Valley took their second game 10-3 against the Gallatin Valley Outlaws.

Wood and Micah McClure combined to allow only five hits in the opening shutout, with McClure picking both RBIs at the plate. The Mariners scored in the second and seventh innings in the win.

Mission Valley was rolling early offensively against the Outlaws, scoring three times in the first and second innings to take a quick 6-2 lead. Wood had a game-high three RBIs and Kade Schutzman went 3 for 4 with a triple.

Loggers swept at home

The Bitterroot Bucs piled up 22 runs in a high-scoring doubleheader sweep of the Libby Loggers.

Bitterroot won the first game 15-6 and the finale 7-4.

While Libby’s pitchers may have struggled, the offense thrived, led by Brady Bateman who went 5 for 8 in the doubleheader with four doubles and three RBIs. Braydan Thom added three hits and doubled in both games.
