BELGRADE — Alex McSmith broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Boise Gems pulled away for a 9-5 win Saturday night at the Boys of Summer Invitational.

Later in the night, the Belgrade Bandits held on to send the Twins to a second straight loss, 7-5.

In the first game, the Twins led 5-2 after a three-run top of the third inning and outhit the Gems 8-6, but Boise took advantage of four Glacier errors and held the Twins off the scoreboard over the final three innings.

Vinny Smith went 2 for 2 with a double and a triple, and A.J. Wetsch went 3 for 3 with a triple of his own in the loss. Jesse Walburn smacked a two-run double in the Glacier third.

Jake Randall went the distance for the Gems to earn the win.

In the nightcap, Belgrade broke a 4-4 deadlock with two runs in the fifth and survived a late Glacier comeback attempt. The Twins scored once in the bottom of the sixth and final inning and left the tying runs on base.

Tristin Steinwand went 2 for 2 with a double against the Bandits.

Bucs, Rangers split twinbill

EUREKA — Kootenai Valley scored 11 times in the fourth inning to run away with a 14-3 victory in game one but the Bitterroot Bucs bounced back to take game two 4-3 in nine innings on Saturday afternoon.

Both games were scheduled for seven innings but neither finished in the seventh. The Rangers’ 11-run outburst ended the first game in the middle of the fifth because of the 10-run rule and Kootenai Valley stayed alive with a bottom of the seventh inning run in the nightcap only to see the Bucs win the game in the ninth.

Dawson Henrie was 6 for 8 at the plate on the day, including perfect 4 for 4 in game one. Henrie was also the winning pitcher in the opener.
