LOCAL ROUNDUP: Car show, street party planned Saturday

The Big Shindig, a combination car show and street party, is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 25, in downtown Kalispell.

The entire block in front of the DeSoto Grill, 227 First St. W., will be closed. Live music will fill the street featuring Mike Murray, Jameson & the Sordid Seeds, The Lucitones and the Thee Infernals.

Bring your lawn chairs.

The car show will showcase pre-’64 hot rods, classics, customs, “rat rods,” unfinished vehicles and bikes. Other cars are welcome to attend but will not be eligible for judging. The entry fee for cars to be judged is $20. Entry fee for cars that are not being judged is $10. Trophies will be presented at 4 p.m. The first 90 entries will receive goodie bags.

There will be a pin-up outfit costume contest for women, with a chance to win one of three trophies. Entry is free. Judging begins at 3:30 p.m.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. a poker walk will take place downtown. The person with the best hand will win a gift basket from participating businesses.

Little Guy Wrestling will have a 50/50 fundraiser raffle.

A variety of vendors will be on hand. Beer will be sold at the event and DeSoto Grill will be serving fresh barbecue all day.


Trail session teaches bear awareness

Explore bear sign and increase your animal awareness on a family-friendly guided hike with field naturalist Kim Corette from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 23 along the Whitefish Trail.

Practice using inert bear spray, increase your confidence and learn about bear safety while in the backcountry. This outing will involve an easy one to two-mile hike. Meet at the Lion Mountain trailhead at 5:30 p.m.

Corette served for many years as a backcountry ranger in the Bob Marshall Wilderness.
