Tennis roundup: Ten divisional titles in row for Polson girls; Whitefish boys win first since 2008

Polson’s Mollie Lemm pulled off the upset of the tournament, her teammate Marlee Congdon won the singles title and the Pirates picked up enough other wins along the way to claim their 10th consecutive Northwestern A divisional tennis championship on Friday at The Summit.

The Whitefish boys won their first divisional title since 2008.

“(Winning 10 in a row) was a huge goal of ours,” Polson coach Bob Hislop said. “We had a lot of kids score, even some of the kids that didn’t place. I think we did very well.”

“We’ve had some good teams and some good players over the years and the other schools have been kind of loaded and we’d never been able to get over the hump,” Whitefish boys coach Chris Schwaderer said. “This victory is kind of an indication of where the program is and where the culture is at Whitefish right now.”

The Pirates girls scored 54 points to best Whitefish’s 42, and they did so on the strength of two terrific singles efforts. Lemm stunned two-time defending champion Emily Getts of Columbia Falls, 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the semifinals, handing Getts her first loss to a conference opponent since 2013.

“The two girls are kind of carbon copies of each other,” Hislop said of Lemm and Getts. “They’re both super intelligent and Mollie plays a real cerebral game. If you’re going to win some of these matches you can’t take a point off and one of our assistants said ‘I don’t think Mollie took a single point off.’”

Congdon won the divisional title with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Lemm in the championship match. Getts also qualified for state, winning the third place match 6-3, 6-2 over Whitefish’s Lili Szundy.

The top four singles and doubles finishers qualify for the state tournament, May 26-27 in Bozeman and Livingston.

Whitefish won the boys crown on the strength of three state singles qualifiers. Top-seeded Max Smyley won the divisional title with three straight set wins, rolling in the championship match 6-2, 6-2 against fellow Bulldog Eric Holdhusen. Nathan Fauth will join that pair at state after a fourth place finish.

Smyley and Holdhusen are both sophomores, and both making their second trip to the state tournament.

The Bulldogs finished with 60 points, topping second place Polson’s 43. Stevensville and Columbia Falls rounded out the field. Whitefish missed winning the boys title a year ago by just one point.

“I couldn’t be happier for the kids and their parents and their work ethic,” Schwaderer said. “(This title) has been coming for a few years and it’s finally gotten there. I’m so proud of what they’ve done and I look forward to seeing what we can do at state.”

Polson’s Cadis Chowning and Matt Sitter won the boys doubles championship, beating a couple of their teammates in the final. The match, however, ended unfortunately for the Pirates. The duo of Quaid Harlan and Colin Kenney won the first set and was playing for match point in the second when Kenney suffered a knee injury and retired. The pair will still advance to the state tournament, although Kenney will be replaced if he is unable to participate.

The other two doubles qualifiers were Whitefish teams. Brendan Bulls and Austin Reese defeated Ryan Brown and Cole Turgeon, 6-3, 6-3 in the third place match.

The script was flipped in the girls doubles draw, with two Whitefish teams squaring off for the championship and a pair of Polson teams battling for third place. The Bulldogs’ Katie Fyall and Anna Peterson won the divisional title with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Hannah Madsen and Heather Luedke.

The Pirates’ Cassie Carlyle and Shawna Lenz earned third place with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory against Olivia Hewston and Kyler Lundeen.

Glacier’s Johnson second at AA state tournament

GREAT FALLS — Glacier senior Spencer Johnson fell one win short of a state championship, earning second place at the Class AA state tournament, which concluded on Friday.

Johnson, who was part of a state champion doubles team as a sophomore, fell 6-0, 6-1 to Bozeman’s Marcos Zelver in the finals. The Wolfpack senior won his semifinal match earlier in the day, sweeping Fergus Pollard of Billings West, 6-4, 6-0.

Glacier’s girls doubles team of Maya Buckingham and Anna Cecil reached the semifinals with a pair of wins Thursday but dropped both matches Friday to narrowly miss out of a top four finish.

Flathead sophomore Ellie Berreth won her first match in the consolation draw on Friday, but she too fell just short of a state placement. Berreth dropped a tight 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 decision to Great Falls C.M. Russell’s Mackenzie George in the consolation semifinals.

Bozemzan comfortably won both the girls and boys team titles. Glacier and Flathead finished fifth in the boys and girls team races, respectively.

Libby leads at B-C state

MISSOULA — Libby will have to wait one more day before celebrating a possible state championship at the Class B-C tennis tournament, which continued on a rainy Friday at Peak Racquet Club and Playfair Park.

The Loggers have 26 points, 10 clear of Missoula Loyola, but only one Libby doubles team remains with championship matches scheduled.

Libby’s Erik Lauer and Braydan Thom won two three-set matches, including a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 nail-biter in the semifinals.

Kaylene Hudson of Libby will also play for a state title after winning 6-4, 6-2 over Loyola Sacred Heart’s Melanie Benson in the semis.
