LETTER: SD3 candidate reflects on valley's generosity

| November 3, 2016 10:00 AM

As Election Day approaches, I want to express how honored I am to run for the office of state senator in District 3. Having knocked on almost 3,000 doors here in the Flathead Valley, I feel incredibly thankful to the many people who opened their doors and shared their concerns with me.

There was a wide diversity of viewpoints, but the unifying factor was the civility and even hospitality I received from virtually everyone I encountered. Many of you, both Democrats AND Republicans, invited me into your homes and offered me refreshment. On one occasion I was even invited to stay for dinner by folks I had just met, and that invitation came from Republicans!

It was a reminder that regardless of what is happening at the federal level, we live in a community that can still engage with one another despite our political views in ways that are open, respectful and meaningful. More importantly, it was a reminder to me how wonderful our community is and how truly blessed I am to call this valley home.

Thank you again to the great people living here. You have touched my life in a profound way and I am forever grateful. —Melissa Hartman, Whitefish Democrat, SD 3 candidate
