LETTER: Today's refugee invasion has no parallel in U.S. history

| October 9, 2016 11:00 AM

Tom Horelick of Libby wrote recently that Frank Miele was wrong on saying refugees from parts of the globe that hate our culture and our values need to be curtailed. Well, Tom, more than half the country agrees readily with Frank Miele — and I’m one of them.

I, too, as you belabored, was a descendant from primarily Polish/Italians that immigrated to Ellis Island more than 70 years ago. I, too, am one of eight children and am so thankful they bore that arduous journey to get to America — a nation that stood for individual freedom and liberty in the world. They never stopped being grateful; as a matter fact, all our family heritage (and it is lengthy) has been composed of very good citizens.

They served in the military and raised their children to respect what this great land offered. They received no government help as it wasn’t even offered back in those days — they proudly would not have taken it. I remember standing by at so many parades and when our flag went by, their hats would come off, eyes would well with tears, and their hands firmly placed over their hearts.

Now let’s switch to the America we have today. Illegals pour over our “borders” daily — millions in a few short years. Our laws are not being enforced to protect us from this “invasion.” The USA has the most lenient immigration policy second to NONE in the world. No country allows over a million immigrants to enter legally each year. Our generous visa programs are improperly managed, and thousands of visitors each year are “lost in the paperwork” and they just “stay” in our country. The immigrant and refugee count is staggering from Muslim nations. Based on a 2011 study by Pew and by CAIR (the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which has strong ties to the Muslim Brotherhood) between 2.8 million and 7 million Muslims have now poured into our nation. Many of the recent attacks against citizens on U.S. soil have been carried out by Muslim/Islamic sympathizers. They do not assimilate well. You get the golden gift card to come to a great country and your Muslim/Islamic loyalties train you to either destroy the nation’s values and culture — or wait patiently and overwhelm it.

Mr. Horelick, I challenge you to prove the Polish immigrants of yesteryear and the current “refugee invasion” from Middle Eastern nations have the same designs and love for this country … By the way; it would behoove you to read Mr. Miele’s weekly column. —Linda Johnson, Kalispell
