Lake County open burners do not need to contact dispatch

Those taking part in open burning in Lake County do not need to call the 911 communications center this year.

In the past, dispatchers asked that people call so they could keep a log of open burns.

According to a press release, the change in policy was made after consulting fire chiefs in the community, the Lake County fire warden and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Division of Fire.

The public is reminded of theses open burning regulations and tips:

  • Fire must be attended until fully extinguished
  • Watch for changing weather conditions such as wind and be prepared to extinguish your burn.
  • Call 911 for help immediately if you feel uncomfortable or the fire gets out of control
  • Have fire control tools such as, water, shovels, rakes and fire extinguishers ready and nearby prior to starting your burn.
  • Have enough person power present to control your fire.
  • Burn only natural materials, no man-made materials or trash.
