The MHSA all-class state cross country meet had its surprises, not the least of which was the sunshine at Rebecca Farm on Saturday.

After three weeks of rain the course was still in great condition for the more than 1,100 kids that ran, a bit soft but well maintained to hold up for eight races.

Bigfork junior Bryn Morley won the first race of the day, claiming her second straight Class B girls individual title in a time of 17 minutes, 53.38 seconds. Morley, who along with her older sister Makena have combined to win the last six state titles for Bigfork, broke out on a tear from the starting line, running her first mile in 5:33, 26 seconds faster than the rest of the field. She continued her pace in the final two miles, pulling away to win by 57 seconds.

“My goal was to get under 18 (minutes) and I did that, so I was happy with it,” Morley said. “It was raining, but it was actually super nice and the course was nice and filled in.”

Valkyries teammate Anya Young finished second in 18:56.46 and Alicia Kalenak was 11th in 19:57.95 to help the Bigfork girls to a second place finish overall, falling behind Manhattan by 16 points.

Eureka’s Tyann Totten finished seventh in 19:48.20 and Mckay Guckenberg ninth in 19:49.31 to lift the Lions to a fourth place finish. Eureka tied third-place Colstrip for third place but lost the tiebreaker by finishing its sixth and seventh runners behind the Fillies.

Libby’s Lauren Thorstenson also finished all-state, crossing the finish line 13th in 20:02.46. The Loggers finished 12th as a team.

The biggest surprise of the day came four races later, however, in the Class AA girls event, where Glacier sophomore Annie Hill, ranked third nationally, fell off the pace in the final mile for the second time this season on the way to a seventh place finish.

Hill, who had a similar showing at the Mountain West Classic where she led after two miles only to place 12th, was running shoulder to shoulder at the front of the race until the final climb up the hill, when she lost nearly a minute off the pace of the lead pack to finish in 17:36.65.

Billings Senior sophomore Tiahna Vladic, ranked 17th nationally, continued to push the pace in the final mile, winning by more than 10 seconds in a personal-best time of 16:40.74.

“I’m pretty excited,” Vladic said. “I felt like I needed to go all out and leave it on the course (after 1 1/2 miles). I knew that I had to keep going and keep pushing. I felt like if I could push the second and third mile it would be a good race.”

The Bozeman girls, led by Camila Noe in second place and Kenenni Wiegand in fourth, finished five runners all-state in a runaway win for their 10th straight team title.

Flathead’s Kaitlyn Wride was 13th in 18:05.31 to finish her junior season with an all-state medal.

“I really just wanted to do the best I could do today,” Wride said. “I was just looking to go out and have fun.”

Bozeman’s Chase Equall, ranked 24th nationally for the boys, capped his undefeated senior season with a new state record, finishing in 14:40.74 to edge past the 23-year-old mark.

“I think I could’ve knocked maybe two seconds off,” Equall said. “That was like a 15-second PR. My teammate (Duncan Hamilton) PR’d by 30-something seconds. Absoltuely incredible.”

Equall, who finished 20 seconds ahead of the field, led a Bozeman boys team that finished four runners in the top six places to win its ninth straight state title.

Flathead’s Ben Perrin placed 12th in 15:46.61, ahead of the Glacier pack of Elijah Boyd in 13th (15:52.17) and Tevyn Stetson in 14th (15:52.91). Brock Adkins was 16th, just outside all-state qualification, to help the Wolfpack take third as a team. Flathead finished sixth.

Columbia Falls freshman Kimberly Peacock kept pace with eventual Class A girls champion Pipi Eitel for the first two miles before the Belgrade senior began to pull away. Peacock kept pushing, however, to finish second in 18:30.96. The Wildkats were fourth as a team.

“I took it out harder than I usually would because I had a goal and I wanted to achieve it,” Peacock said. “I was sticking with those girls that were at the top. Overall I think that paid off.”

Polson sophomore Beatrix Frissell finished third in 18:49.24. Pirates teammate Molly Sitter was 11th in 19:28.59 to help Polson to a fifth place finish.

The Whitefish girls narrowly missed another state team title, finishing six points behind Hardin for the championship. The Bulldogs were led by sophomores Ella Greenberg in 12th at 19:28.90 and Braya Hobson in 13th at 19:29.07.

Columbia Falls senior Sage Wanner was the top local finisher in the Class A boys race, 10th in 16:14.50.

Columbia Falls finished sixth as a team.

Corvallis senior Carson Jessop won the individual Class A title and the Frenchtown boys won the team title.

Townsend’s Bryant Edgerton won the Class B boys race in 15:54.49 to lead the Bulldogs to a team title.

Manhattan Christian won the Class C boys team title, finishing all three scoring runners in the top eight. Winnett-Melston won the Class C girls trophy. Darby’s Evan Duggan and Gracie Lang won the Class C individual titles.
