LETTER: Dems bad for workers

| October 22, 2016 11:00 AM

I just can’t NOT respond to the unfortunately titled “Republicans not good for workers.” Mr. Shaughnessy tells us of the insanity of being fooled by Republican leadership and why we need to stop voting for “them.”

He lists the amazing accomplishments of FDR, leaving out that unemployment was 24.9 percent when he became our president and 1.9 percent when he died. There is a “however” in there ... under FDR’s administration, unemployment was in the double digits every single year (eight years) until Pearl Harbor — we were at a whopping 14.6 percent unemployment rate before we joined the war.

President Roosevelt was responsible for taking 110,000 American citizens and locking them up in internment camps — and most were not returned to their previous homes; they were expected to find their own way back. They came back to discover their homes and possessions gone, for the most part.

As Mr. Shaughnessy reminded us readers, FDR was responsible for the Glass/Steagle Act, which was a great thing, until everyone’s favorite Democrat, Bill Clinton, repealed it. Many economists have credited this as part of how the whole housing industry debacle came about.

Mr. Obama shoved Obamacare (I can’t call it “affordable” because that’s contradicted by the facts) down our throats, and guess what? We just got our rates for 2017 — for my husband and myself, $1,514 per month! That’s more than most of us pay for a mortgage! I do not believe that a few represent the whole, as Mr. Shaughnessy seems to, but really? Democrats have been good for workers? Really? —Julie Miller, Marion
