SOCCER ROUNDUP: Glacier splits with Capital; Flathead swept by Helena

HELENA — Glacier's boys scored first but dropped a 2-1 Western AA conference soccer match to Helena Capital on Friday night.

Dyllyn Stabler opened the scoring in the first half with an assist from Rohit Tappeta to give Glacier a 1-0 lead, but penalties cost the Wolfpack late.

Despite a 1-0 halftime lead, Capital made the best of two penalty kick opportunities in the second half, netting goals from Kaycen Spencer and Zach Brandt to take the lead and win the game.

Glacier outshot the Bruins 10-8 in the match.

BONNERS FERRY, Idaho — Darren Kauffman scored in the 26th minute and the Cougars defense did the rest in a shutout win.

Kauffman tallied off an assist from Jakob Hembroff to put Stillwater Christian in front and Zack Basnett made six saves to earn the shutout for Stillwater Christian (2-1-1), which lost 9-0 Thursday night in Sandpoint, Idaho.

“It’s sometimes hard to come back on the second day on a two-day trip and play well and play hard but the guys did,” Stillwater coach Ryan O’Rourke said. “They worked really hard, particularly in the second half. It was good to see.”

WHITEFISH — Belgrade hit the post a few times in the first half before exploding for four goals in a nonconference shutout of Whitefish at Smith Fields.

Jeffrey DeBuse scored a pair of goals and Brandon Rockwell and Ansel Brayton each had one as the Panthers broke open the scoring in the second half.

“When they finally did break through with their first goal, two more came within the next five minutes,” Whitefish boys coach John Lacey said.

Belgrade (2-1) outshot Whitefish (1-1) 20-4 in the contest and had six corner kicks to the Bulldogs four.

HELENA — Gabby Dickson and Cadie Williams scored first half goals to lift the Wolfpack to a victory over Helena Capital.

The Wolfpack (2-1) outshot Capital 12-6 and Maddie Armstrong was solid in net with four saves.

Capital added a late goal from Cassie Brisko on a scrum in front of the net.

Nicholson scored on a free kick.

“We played well in the first half, possession soccer,” Whitefish coach Roland Benedict. “We probably completed twice as many passes as they did. We just couldn’t find the final penetrating pass to score.

“The second half, Belgrade pressed and kept us pinned in our own half. It was a learning eperience for us to play possession out of our own defensive half.”

BONNERS FERRY, Idaho — Stillwater Christian School dropped a pair of nonconference contests in Idaho to Bonners Ferry on Friday and to the Sandpoint JV on Thursday.

“Despite losses of both our games, we are pleased with how much the young ladies are improving with each game,” Stillwater coach JR Hemp said.

“In the Sandpoint game the girls struggled to control the midfield, but we had solid defensive play throughout the match by Loren Pittaway, Madi Schwartz, Chole Mathwig and Victoria Hanson. Our second game was challenging since they were still recovering from the (Sandpoint JV) game.”

MISSOULA — Tiara Duford scored five goals, Ashlee Howell had five assists and Polson crushed Missoula Loyola-Sacred Heart in nonconference play.

The Howell to Duford connection tallied four goals over a 25-minute span that stretched both halves to help the Pirates (1-0-0) open up a huge lead.

Howell added a goal of her own in the 60th minute and Duford tacked on two assists.
