Glacier's Hill cruises at Flathead Invite

Even as Annie Hill shook off some rust, she easily left other girls in the dust.

The two-time defending Class AA state champion from Glacier covered the reconfigured three-mile course at Rebecca Farm in 17:15.54 to coast to a win at the Flathead Invitational on a picturesque Friday afternoon.

Hill, a junior, was the only one of 137 girls to finish in less than 18 minutes. It was her first race of the cross country season after the nationally-ranked distance runner’s extensive track schedule stretched well into July.

“I was pretty nervous,” Hill said of returning from her layoff. “I always want to perform well and I didn’t know who was racing or who was going to be there so I just wanted to have a good time. I didn’t really have a racing strategy, I was just trying to get back into the season.”

The race attracted runners from nearly 30 schools from around the state and served as a preview of the state championship meets, which will be run on the same course on Oct. 22. Hill and the other top runners were pleased with the course setup, which was more compact than in previous years.

“They made some changes and I really like it,” Hill said. “I’m excited to run state on it. I like that we don’t go quite as far down so I feel like more people were around all the time.”

Despite the win, Hill wasn’t enamored with her time and left the course plotting to cut significant seconds off both her finish Friday and the all-class state record (16:33.20) she set last year at the state meet in Great Falls.

“I think I need to work on pushing myself a little bit more,” she said. “I know I’ll have competition at state but I really need to be able, in all of my races, to be able to get the time I want.

“I would really like to be under 16 minutes this year. I’ve got a long way to go from my first race but from my best time I think I can get there.”

In the boys race, Missoula Sentinel’s Marshall Beatty claimed his second straight Flathead Invitational title, leading — like Hill — from start to finish. Beatty, a senior, clocked in at 15:07.94.

Flathead sophomore Ben Perrin was next, setting a personal best in 15:33.39. Perrin, the younger brother of former Braves state champions Zach and Jake, was also complimentary of the course setup.

“I was kind of on edge about it because last year the course was a lot tougher with potholes and everything,” he said.

“It was nice to kind of loop around. It definitely felt shorter, for sure.”

Perrin put some distance between himself and the rest of the field in the second half of the race, crossing the line 14 seconds ahead of Missoula Hellgate’s Morris Wecker.

“Any time you can get a PR (personal record) it’s a good race,” Perrin said.

“I learned last race — I had kind of gone out slower and started working my way up. I learned a lot about that racing style and it kind of suits me better.”

Columbia Falls senior Sage Wanner finished fifth in 16:05.57, the top time for any Class A runner. Glacier’s Tevyn Stetson (sixth, 16:13.77) and Brock Adkins (ninth, 16:24.17) also placed in the top 10.

The Wolfpack won the boys team title with 61 points. Hellgate was second and Sentinel third. Flathead finished fourth with 106 points.

Hellgate posted the top girls score (53), ahead of Glacier (68), Sentinel (84) and Flathead (112).

The Bravettes were led by Kaitlin Wride in fifth (18:44.92) and Nicole Bouma in eighth (19:21.25).

Bigfork’s Anya Young was sixth (18:45.09) and Glacier’s Bailey Smith checked in ninth (19:25.88).
