Road work begins at Glacier Park tunnel
Beginning Monday, visitors to Glacier National Park can expect traffic delays at the Going-to-the-Sun Road’s West Tunnel, where construction workers will be replacing stone veneer and performing other rehabilitation work.
During the daytime, a pair of flaggers will direct one-way traffic through the tunnel, while a temporary traffic light will control the flow of vehicles at night.
According to park spokesman Tim Rains, vehicles can expect roughly 15-minute delays. Nearby pullouts will be blocked to keep visitors away from the construction area.
Elsewhere on Sun Road, work continues on the stone guardrail near Haystack Falls. One-way traffic is expected to continue until winter weather — typically in mid-October — forces the road’s annual closure.
Crews also are continuing work on the Avalanche Creek footbridge.
Most of the south section of the popular scenic walkway is closed to the public, but the hiking trail to Avalanche Lake is still accessible via the north segment of the elevated boardwalk.
On the park’s east side, replacement of the St. Mary entrance station will begin Monday. Traffic will be directed through the adjacent visitor center parking lot.
