LETTER: Sorry, Bob: Trump will 'git 'er done'

As a longtime friend and supporter of Bob Brown I have to state my disappointment in his decision to leave the Republican Party. I fear that Bob has lost the fire in his belly. I won’t address each issue he puts forth, but suffice it to say that Reagan’s belief in America as a “shining city on the hill for all to see” is a good place for Republicans to find common ground.

President Reagan said “the world must see an America that is morally strong with a creed and a vision,” and declared “this is what has led us to dare and achieve,” and “for us, values count.” These remain good words for us to live by.

I would tell those words to my children and grandchildren long before I would use Bob’s diatribe that you can’t do this and you can’t do that because it doesn’t smell good. It is the end result we have striven for in our long history. It hasn’t always been pleasant or pleasing to all, but I believe we have a “git ’er done” candidate in Donald Trump.

Here are a few of the programs a President Trump has committed to:

We will build a wall and secure the United States.

We will thoroughly vet any refugees.

We will rebuild our military.

We will lower corporate and personal income taxes.

We will reform our educational system, including vouchers and school choice.

We will return much authority and decisions back to the states.

We will revitalize our inner cities to make them safe.

We will eliminate stifling regulations that discourage business growth and jobs.

We will balance our budget and pay down debt; and we will become energy independent.

To these and many other changes, President Trump and the Congress can “git ’er done!” How will he pay for this? He has suggested attrition and downsizing the government along with a private investment bond fund to help rebuild our infrastructure. With GDP two or three times its present rate, tax revenues will be substantially increased even with lower tax rates.

Take the last several congressional elections.

When we (the Republicans) won back the House, they promised to do all of the above and more. What happened? Nothing! And the excuse was, “We have to have control of the Senate.” OK. We got control of the Senate, and still nothing happened. And you don’t like what a President Trump wants to do? I acknowledge that he will have to work with Congress, but with a president that will sign the bills, he will “git ’er done.”

Compare this with Mrs. Clinton’s agenda. Wow, she promises to follow President Obama’s dismal record and throw in some Bernie socialism.

Yes, Bob, I think the horse that is pulling your wagon is living in the past. As to a new Republican Party, I think Donald Trump has awakened a great silent majority that resonates with all the issues he has raised. It is time for a new generation to take the reins and listen to we the people. It is happening as the “Never Trump” establishment are panicked that they may lose their golden parachutes! It is time to move on.

I am satisfied that Mr. Trump will select a Cabinet with the best forward-thinking minds in the country. This will enable us to regain the status in the world that has been declining these past eight years. We must abide by our laws, follow the Constitution and again treat each other with respect as fellow citizens.

Finally, Bob, you mentioned Sinclair Lewis and his 1935 novel (living in the past). I submit the fable “Chicken Little” and the sky is falling! With all the issues our country faces, you didn’t mention one positive idea or suggestion in your opinion piece. Why?

One consolation. As Two Dot goes, so goes the state! You are certainly entitled to your vote, and who you vote for is none of my business, but I hope you don’t feel too sad when our electoral votes go Republican — to our next president, Donald Trump.
